Not sure where to start when choosing a day-of hairstyle? Try using your face shape as a jumping-off point! Whether you’re round, oval, square, or heart-shaped, there’s a perfect updo and down ‘do for you. Here, celebrity hairstylist Mara Roszak gives her (very DIY-friendly, very chic, sure-to-flatter) recommendations.
Round
Down 'do: A smooth, center-parted blowout with soft curls at the ends will elongate the face, Roszak says. To get the look, apply a styling cream to damp hair and dry with a round brush. Then, use a curling iron with a one-and-a-half inch barrel to round off the ends. Finish by teasing the crown to add height — it’s another sneaky elongating trick.

Updo: A half-up, half-down hairstyle keeps hair out of your eyes and slims the face. Create a center part, blow-dry hair, then curl the ends with a one-and-a-half inch barrel. Create two skinny braids on either side of your head and secure them with bobby pins, mid-height, at the back of your head. Finish by teasing the crown.
Oval
Down 'do: Oval face shapes can get away with many hairstyles, but loose waves will help to add just a touch of length to your shape. Part hair so that it’s slightly off center and use a one-and-a-quarter inch iron to create soft curls. Then, break up the curls with your fingers, tease the crown, and apply dry shampoo, focusing on the roots. Polish it off with a bit of hairspray to keep everything in place.
Updo: A polished ponytail is another great, universally flattering style that will help add length to your face, if you want it. Use a one-and-a-quarter inch curling iron to create soft, loose curls. Section hair into three parts — one on each side of the head. Tie the back section of your hair into a ponytail with a clear elastic. Then, pull the left section of your hair to the back of your head, wrap it over the elastic, and secure your hair with a bobby pin on the right side. Then, do the reverse: Pull the right section of your hair to the back of your head, wrap it over the elastic, and pin it to the left side of your ponytail. (At this point, your hair should be crisscrossed over the ponytail.) Finish by applying a little hairspray onto your fingertips and gently pulling out the curls to give it a loose, relaxed texture.

Square
Down 'do: A straight and sleek blowout with a center part is super simple and chic, Roszak says. Apply a straightening balm to towel-dried hair, blow-dry it straight, and go over it with a flat iron. Then, on one side of your face, pin your hair behind your ear. (This will create volume to balance out your angles.) Want to add a touch of embellishment? Use a crystal barrette instead, or stick in a small flower!
Updo: A center-parted low ponytail, à la Carolyn Bessette Kennedy will soften your angles. Blow dry hair straight, go over it with a flat iron, and pull it back with a clear elastic. Spray hair with a smoothing serum to eradicate flyaways and boost shine.
Heart
Down 'do: Beachy waves with a side part will balance and soften a heart-shaped face, Roszak says. Apply a texture spray to damp hair and rough dry it. Then, curl your hair with a one-inch barrel iron, but leave out the ends. (Doing this will give you that loose, effortless look.) Finish with a root-lifting spray for added volume.
Updo: Like side-parted waves, a messy side bun will create balance. Part hair to one side. On the side with the part, create one wide braid and wrap it into a bun. Spread the bun apart with your fingertips. Finish by adjusting the bun so that it’s sitting to one side on the nape of your neck and secure it in place.
